Don't panic, I do it ever so carefully choosing well-sealed glass/wood display cases that have not let 1 speck of dust in over the the 5 years I've displayed my cars. Long story short, my collection is growing and I want new display cases, but don't want to break the bank. What do others think of this design? I figure I can get 50-60 cars in it and it fits my traditional decor very well. Comes in several finishes including sanded-natural, so it could be painted ANY color to suite many tastes! Of course, it would NOT have shot glasses, but rather sparkling 1:43rd masterpieces! In fact, I've NEVER owned a case with a mirror-back, so I'm not so sure about that, but I figure I could always cover that with alcantara, satin etc for a different look? What is everyone's opinion on this case for $139 ? Really would appreciate any thoughts or alternatives? Happy Collecting, F43

Those are nice display cases, especially if someone has a small collection. They don't take up much space and can be hung like a nice picture. However my own preference is for complete wall cabinets. Of course I do realize they are probably more expensive and yes, that is what has kept me from properly displaying my cars. I've often considered going the IKEA way and using the Billy cabinets with glass doors, but I know they don't seal very well. When the time comes, and my budget permits, I will opt for wall to wall cabinets. A friend redid his office with built in bookcases and had good results by one of the closet storage companies (California Closets). But, since you mentioned you have used well-sealed cases for the past 5 years.... I'm curious, what have you been using all this time? (12/05/08 21:31:04) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I got one small case from Ikea and there was a gap all around the glass door. I put a strip of scotch tape all around the door, half on - half off, so that the sticky side is facing out. This completely seals the door and makes a satisfying and slow release of air sound when it closes. You can't see it at all and it works great. Hope I explained that well. It doesn't stick to the cabinet at all because when it closes it kind of curves back. I was also thinking about getting a regular sized book case from Ikea and getting a plexiglass sheet or two to cover it. I would run a strip of magnetic tape all around the glass forming a seal. The glass would then be easily removed. Someday. Most of mine sit out on the shelf in their boxes.

The cheapest that I've seen for these is around, $180-$195 plus shipping. These cabinets seem to be more common in the U.K. than the U.S. So, until I find something better (cheaper), I'll still be stacking my models in thier cases on glass shelves. BTW, has anybody done business with Model-Car. com in Portugal. I've found a couple of models that I've been looking for and thier prices plus shipping seem reasonable, but I've never done business with them. Are they reliable, etc.?? Thanks for any info!! Dave

When the time comes, and my budget permits, I will opt for wall to wall cabinets. Despite the problems with the small gaps, I've gone for the Ikea Billy cabinet (x 6) to create the built in look. The six cabinets cost me about $1,000, but anything professionally fitted would have been four of five times that and I figured the difference was better spent on models. The dust issue isn't to bad. The gaps at the top and bottom can be removed by using adhesive weatherseal and I also added a crown molding which sits above the top of the doors that helps keep out the dust. This leaves only the gap between the doors at the front. Because the hinges are adjustable, this gap can be adjusted to almost nothing. Here's an old picture of part of my setup from about 18 months ago which I think I've posted here before. The cabinets are bit more crowded now (having blown the 3 - 4 grand I saved on the built in cabinets on other models !). It looks a bit sparce in pictures but much better in real life.

Perhaps they won't look so good on black. They have a wood grain option don't they? Do they make additional shelves? So can you see the ones up top decently? And is the bottom shelf the row of shame? P.S. I don't see the Jagers.

(12/10/08 02:39:28) Driver Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I suspect that jgr64 has a shelf for each year of Le Mans, looking at what is there (plus a conversation we had at Le Mans this year). In the UK we have a few display cabinet makers, e.g. http://www.picture-pride-displays.co.uk/index.htm In particular these ones give a nearly 100% dust free environment, which I find essential where I live. I have ones from another bespoke maker (without a web presence) that have magnetic closures and a wrap-around door. I also have a couple of Ikea Bertby units (that are now discontinued in England) but tend to only display cars in their acrylic cases in those, e.g. Red-Lines, LookSmarts and BBRs.

Mike, glad you recognised the layout. Each half shelf represents one year, arranged historically top to bottom, left to right, with the cars of each year arranged in finishing order. Additional shelves are available from Ikea and if you look closely you can see the small holes the pins sit in to adjust the shelf heights.
